Osmanieh class broadside ironclads, 1864

In 1860 the Turkish fleet consisted of 7 line-of-battle-ships, 6 frigates, 4 corvettes and 9 smaller vessels, but under Sultan Abdul Aziz (1861-1876) a modest programme of ironclad construction was started with the help of Britain and France. After Abdul Hamid came to power in 1876 no major ships were ordered for over a decade.
