John Purdy (1773-1843) was the foremost Hydrographic authority of his day. He became interested in naval charts from an early age, and was appointed hydrographer for Messrs. Laurie & Whittle in London. The monogram of Richard Laurie appears on the present chart. He does not appear to have participated in any Hydrographic expeditions himself, confining himself to compiling charts and writing navigational aids based on reports from other.
